Charcoal Grill Safety at Blue Mountain Cabins

Grilling outdoors is one of the highlights of a mountain vacation. Whether you're cooking burgers after a day of hiking or enjoying dinner under the stars, the charcoal grills at Blue Mountain Cabins help create memorable moments during your stay.

Because our cabins are located in a forested mountain environment, grill safety is extremely important. Improper handling of hot charcoal or ashes can cause burns, property damage, or even wildfires. Please review these important safety guidelines before using the charcoal grill.

Adult Supervision is Required

For safety and liability reasons, the charcoal grill must be operated by an adult age 23 or older.

Charcoal grills can reach temperatures exceeding 500°F, and hot surfaces can cause severe burns. To prevent accidents:

  • Only adults should light and operate the grill
  • Children and minors must stay clear of the grill area
  • Do not allow small children near hot grill surfaces
  • Assume metal surfaces remain hot even after cooking

If children are present, establish a safe distance around the grill where they are not allowed to play.

Never Leave a Grill Unattended

Once the grill is lit, an adult must remain nearby at all times.

Unattended grills can become dangerous quickly due to wind, flare-ups, or falling embers. Always keep the grill within sight while charcoal is burning.

  • Stay near the grill while cooking
  • Monitor food to prevent grease flare-ups
  • Avoid grilling during strong wind conditions
  • Fully extinguish coals when finished

Guests Must Provide Their Own Charcoal

Guests are welcome to bring their preferred charcoal and grilling supplies. We recommend bringing:

  • Charcoal briquettes or lump charcoal
  • A starter or lighter cubes
  • Grill tools are provided

Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start a charcoal grill.

Safe Disposal of Charcoal Ashes

Proper ash disposal is one of the most important safety rules when using the grill.

Even when ashes appear cold, they can retain heat for many hours. Improper disposal can easily ignite dry leaves, grass, or surrounding vegetation.

Allow Coals to Cool Completely

After cooking, close the grill vents and lid to reduce oxygen and allow coals to burn out naturally. Always allow ashes to cool completely before handling them.

Use a Metal Ash Bucket

Ashes must be placed in a metal ash bucket or fireproof container. This prevents lingering embers from starting a fire.

Never Dump Ashes in the Yard or Woods

For safety and environmental protection:

  • Do NOT dump ashes in the yard
  • Do NOT throw ashes into the woods
  • Do NOT scatter ashes on the ground
  • Do NOT place ashes in household trash or garbage bags

Even small embers can ignite dry grass, leaves, or forest debris.

Use the Fire Pit or Designated Ash Container

Dispose of ashes only in approved fire-safe locations such as a designated metal ash bucket or fire pit.

Protecting the Mountain Environment

Blue Mountain Cabins is located in a forested mountain region where wildfire risk can increase during dry periods. A single hot ember can ignite leaves or brush and spread quickly.

By following these grill safety guidelines, guests help protect:

  • The cabin property
  • Nearby forests and wildlife
  • Neighboring cabins and homes
  • Future guests visiting the area

Quick Grill Safety Checklist

  • Grill operation restricted to adults age 23+
  • Never leave the grill unattended
  • Keep children away from hot surfaces
  • Guests must provide their own charcoal
  • Never dump ashes in the yard, woods, or trash
