Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail - A Must-Do Scenic Drive in the Great Smoky Mountains

Everyone flocks to Cades Cove for its famous loop, but if you're looking for a quieter, more magical drive through the Smokies, head to the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Tucked just minutes from bustling Gatlinburg, this winding one-way road delivers lush forests, sparkling streams, pioneer history, and jaw-dropping waterfalls - all without the massive crowds.

Why Roaring Fork Stands Out

This 5.5-mile scenic route follows the namesake Roaring Fork stream, one of the park's biggest and fastest-flowing. After a good rain, you'll hear (and feel) why it's called "roaring"! The narrow, twisty road is perfect for slowing down, soaking in the views, and stepping out at pull-offs for short walks or hikes.

Key Details:
  • Length: 5.5 miles one-way (narrow and winding—drive carefully!).
  • Vehicle Restrictions: Passenger cars and trucks only. No buses, trailers, RVs, or motorhomes over 25 feet.
  • Season: Open May 1 to November 29 (weather permitting). Closed in winter - always double-check current status on the NPS site: nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/seasonalroads.htm](https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/seasonalroads.htm.
  • How to Get There: From Gatlinburg's main Parkway, turn at Traffic Light #8 onto Historic Nature Trail Road (also called Airport Road). Head to the Cherokee Orchard entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Just past the Rainbow Falls parking area, turn right onto the signed one-way Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.
  • Pro Tip: Arrive early (before 9 AM) or late afternoon to snag parking and avoid peak crowds. A parking tag may be required in busy areas—grab one online or at a visitor center ahead of time.

Must-See Stops Along the Way

Noah “Bud” Ogle’s Cabin & Homestead

Before the loop officially starts, stop at this charming 1800s farmstead. A short, easy self-guiding nature trail winds past the log cabin, a clever tub mill powered by a hand-built wooden flume, and remnants of mountain life. It's a quick, fascinating peek into pioneer days.

Rainbow Falls Trailhead

Rainbow Falls
Right before the loop, park for the Rainbow Falls hike (5.4 miles round trip, moderate-strenuous). This 80-foot single-drop waterfall is the park's tallest of its kind. Sunny days often produce a shimmering rainbow in the mist—pure magic!

Inside the Loop Highlights:

  • Two Scenic Overlooks: Pull off for panoramic views of layered Smoky Mountains ridges.
  • Grotto Falls (Trillium Gap Trail): About 2.6 miles round trip (easy-moderate). One of the Smokies' best-kept secrets—you can walk *behind* the 25-foot waterfall! Parking fills fast, so plan accordingly.
  • Baskins Creek Falls: A peaceful 3-mile round-trip hike to a stunning 40-foot, two-tiered cascade - fewer people, more serenity.
  • Place of a Thousand Drips: No hike needed! Near the end, this roadside wonder splits rainwater into hundreds of tiny streams cascading down a rock face. Mesmerizing after rain.
  • Historic Remnants: Spot old homesites, a grist mill, and other pioneer structures that whisper stories of early settlers.

Keep your camera ready for wildlife—black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and more roam here. Drive slowly, stay in your vehicle near animals, and never feed them (it's illegal and unsafe).
